Detection method of isopropanol

Isopropanol is an organic compound, an isomer of n-propanol, also known as dimethyl methanol and 2-propanol. It is also called IPA in isopropanol manufacturers. It is a colorless transparent liquid, similar to the smell of a mixture of ethanol and acetone. Soluble in water, but also soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform and other organic solvents. Isopropanol is an important chemical product and raw material. Isopropanol manufacturers mainly use it in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plastics, spices, coatings, etc.

Characteristics: colorless and transparent liquid, with the smell of ethanol and acetone mixture, can be miscible with alcohol, ether, chloroform and water, can dissolve alkaloids, rubber, shellac, rosin, synthetic resin and other organic substances and some inorganic substances, form azeotrope with water, and is insoluble in salt solution. It can ignite and burn at room temperature, and its steam is easy to form explosive mixture when mixed with air.

Isopropanol is prone to produce peroxide, which sometimes needs to be identified before use. The test method is: take 0.5ml isopropanol, add 1ml10% potassium iodide solution and 0.5ml1:5 dilute hydrochloric acid and a few drops of starch solution, shake for 1 minute, if it turns blue or blue black, it indicates that there is peroxide. It is similar to ethanol and propanol, but it has the characteristics of secondary alcohol.
